This is what Newport stopped doing

Every line is something a neighbor has changed about living here. Nothing is counted and nothing is ranked. Tagged where it belongs to something others said too. Written by neighbors, published anonymously, and only because they said we could.

Walking after dark
I'm second-guessing my evening walks with my toddler.

Walking after dark
I had to tell my mom and dad to stop going on their walks, I'm worried for their safety.

Our family avoids any walk or grocery in the area when the sun is down.

Walking after dark
I have stopped taking evening walk with my toddler. We used to look forward to this after a long day.
Newport resident
Walking after dark
I had to tell parents to stop going for their evening walks. I never go to the mall alone
Newport resident
Walking after dark
I constantly fear being followed, am on edge all the time, and have stopped going out after dark.
Newport resident
Walking after dark
I told my husband not to go out for walks at night and I am also not going for walks with my friends at night.
Newport resident
Walking after dark
I have told my wife and daughter to not walk alone, no evening walks, walk in numbers even during the day, and be aware of surroundings.

Walking after dark
Hesitated to go out on a walk alone. I would have never thought about it twice before this week. Feeling worried for safety going to and from work.

Walking after dark
The line about I had to tell my parents to stop going on their walks was from me. It’s very sad that what used to be the highlight of staying in Newport and how I used to tell my parents that they should go out and meet other senior citizens in the area and really enjoy the beautiful views and gardens here, has now changed to - don’t go out unless I’m coming with you, walk away from cars, be extra vigilant, etc. This is not the conversation I thought I’d ever need to have with my parents.

Walking after dark
I stopped going out for a walk by myself after it’s dark

Letting the children out
I am hypervigilant and worry about my safety and the safety of my children and my friends and my family.

Letting the children out
Going for a simple daytime walk alone is giving me anxiety, I can’t even imagine taking a stroll with my toddler or even going to the playground /Newport Green. My mind just keeps racing, imagining all possible worst-case scenarios and how I would protect my toddler if something bad actually happened. Honestly, I don’t think I can even take these walks anymore.

Letting the children out
Felt like the oval wasn’t too safe for my toddler and other kids to play, and not residents detrimental behavior was damaging our experience and ability to enjoy Newport
Newport resident
Letting the children out
I don’t consider going out on a walk is safe anymore. I cannot remain stressfree while walking outside or letting my kid walk outside, and have asked my kid to stay vigilant at all times

The waterfront
Me and my wife stopped walking at waterfront after dark
Newport resident
The waterfront
Today we decided to keep our walk short. My wife did not feel comfortable walking on the waterfront in the dark and did not leave the apartment without me

The waterfront
I am nervous to go to the park with my kids, nervous when I drop them to school and I have stopped going to the boardwalk which I absolutely love and is a breath of literal fresh air and brought peace of mind to me. I really miss just feeling safe even when sitting in my apartment - nervous who is roaming the halls or streets and what message I’m going to get on the group chat about another incident. Make Newport safe again!!!

Coming home at night
1. I’m always anxious when I have to walk to the PATH to take my train to work and back. My work hours are fixed so I don’t have the flexibility to commute when it’s “relatively safe” 2. I’m no longer able to go on my evening walks.
Newport resident
As per police there were people arrested for the two carjackings

Carrying a pepper spray now
Newport resident
I feel unsafe..
Newport resident
I can no longer trust my wife and child will be safe in this neighborhood.
Newport resident
I’m anxious and scared when I’m alone outside.
Newport resident
As a parent, I’m always aware of who is around the park. What’s changed is that I notice the lack of active alertness by the security staff.
