“A group approached me at Newport PATH asking for money for a friend who was unwell. When I said I had no cash they moved on to a young woman standing next to me. They took her phone on the pretext of entering their Zelle details, distracted her, and transferred around $1,000 before she realised what had happened. I called the police myself from the train. They would not take a report from me, because I was not the person who had actually been scammed.”

“A group on the opposite platform threw their leftover food and takeout container at a man waiting on our side, completely unprovoked. They seemed to time it so their train arrived almost immediately afterwards and they could leave.”

“During the evening rush hour at the Newport PATH station, I saw a man in front of me harassing another man, accusing him of touching him. The other man apologized and explained that he hadn't touched him at all, but the harasser kept going, telling him in a racist manner, "We don't do this in America." Eventually, the harasser even took a picture of him on his phone. In a crowded public place like a train station, it's normal for someone's hand to brush against you unintentionally. That doesn't give anyone the right to keep harassing the other person or take their picture. I would be really scared if something like that happened to me.”

“Watched two masked men on the waterfront with a stolen backpack, ripped it apart and then threw everything in a trash when they couldn’t find valuables. Saw me looking in their direction and started threatening me.”

“The first incident happened on a weekday evening while I was walking home from work. It was dark, and an individual began shining a flashlight at me. For a moment, I thought it might be someone I knew, so I removed my earphones. He appeared to be a teenager and told me that his father had passed away and they were raising money. They had candies in a small gift bag, showed me a page of information, and asked for a donation. I explained that I did not have cash or my card, but they insisted that I could make a payment using their phones. This made me suspicious, so I politely declined and said I was sorry. He became aggressive and said, “You have the money; you just don’t want to give it to us.” When I declined again, he said, “Suck my d***, b****.” I responded, “F*** off,” walked away, and put my earphones back in. I could still hear someone yelling behind me. I was unsure whether I was being followed, so I walked faster until I reached my building, where I reported the incident to the security guard. The second encounter happened approximately three to four weeks later with the same individuals. When I saw him approaching, I chose a different route to avoid him, but he followed me and said, “Excuse me.” I turned and said, “I’m sorry,” and he repeated the same abusive words. After this second incident, I called 911 and was directed to the police non-emergency line. I left a voicemail explaining what had happened and requesting a callback, but I never received one. These repeated encounters have left me feeling unsafe while walking near my residence.”

“I’ve had a crazy guy stalk me once, I saw another disturbed person yelling loudly in the park which made me feel unsafe, I’ve seen robberies happening in broad daylight at target, I’ve asked my parents to stop going on their daily walks because of the recent security concerns, I started coming home early because I’m not sure it’s safe to walk in this neighborhood past 9pm anymore.”

“I was attacked by a Middle Aged woman - called me Barbie - hurled racial slurs at me. When my friend tried to intervene she started screaming that I have looked at her in a condescending manner - saying I come here to get men and steal their jobs and just because I look like this, I can’t expect people to be nice - she sees right through me. Next 2 men approached me and said how beautiful I was whether I wanted to go out with them; when I started walking away, they asked for money and started following me.”

“Walking back from Hoboken PATH to Newport across the waterfront around 5:30pm. Was approached by 2 men with gift bags asking me questions. Given I had read some incidents on reddit, I ignored them and started walking faster. They yelled at me for sometime and only stopped when I started running.”

“Electric bikes for delivery almost ran over my 4 year old. A man on a bike acting very strange swearing loudly profanities with children around. My parents car got robbed in the garage.”

“This summer, while I was playing with my toddler in the oval, a group of adolescents/young adults who are not residents of Newport brought a large pit bull into the area and let it run off-leash. The group was unable to control the dog by voice command, and it ran freely around the oval. This was very frightening for those of us with small children. Private security was not present at the time, and nowhere to be found around the playground, so families with young children had to leave the oval for their own safety. The group remained and continued to play with the unleashed dog.”

“A couple of men were in front of path station, playing really loud music with a dog off leash. They indecently peed in front of us and refused to put their dog on leash and started yelling at us”

“A friend of mine was punched in the face in the path train as it rolled into the Newport station. As far as I know, nothing was ever done about it. I’ve bought pepper spray for myself and friends. I am nervous to take my child to daycare. And I am hypervigilant wherever I go now. I don’t even feel safe walking through the target parking lot.”

“There have been multiple incidents. I was assaulted by a homeless man by the beach waterfront last May. It was right after work, broad daylight, with plenty of people around. I was so shocked that I did not report the incident and just fled. I saw the same person around in the neighborhood a few times after that, needless to say the anxiety it caused was quite a lot. A couple weeks after that I was cat called by a man at the newport beach, by Blue Anchor. It triggered and shook me quite a bit as it was so close to the assault. I saw that same man again a few times after. I can’t remember the date for this but this past summer, I was followed by a homeless man as I was walking my dog around the Bisby. We normally circle the Bisby, a walk I have already shortened ever since the assault, but I had to RUN toward the Newport Beach where the people were, because I didn’t want to be followed into my building (The Beach). I live at the Beach, and for years I have felt extremely safe. I would walk my dog late at night by myself as a woman with headphones in, thats how safe it felt. I don’t go out alone at night anymore, I make sure to stay close to the lobby if I have to take the dog out after dark. I worked at the Newport gym for 2 years too, and would teach class early in the morning or late at night. There have been many nights I walked home by myself after 10 pm. I don’t work there anymore but after these past couple weeks I would 1000% be afraid to do that same walk home.”

“At Newport path/ mall area, a group of teenagers started heckling and harassing me. They tried to surround me and scare me. When I yelled that’s when they walked away. On another incident, my father (72) and I were walking towards the Mall and a teenager started pestering my father asking him to buy drugs, when he refused multiple times the guy started following us. I asked him to stop harassing us and a few people around me did the same, he then turned around and threw a big stone at me and started running. Several people were shocked”

“A man was trying to talk to children on the sidewalk in front of the park. He came up to me when I was with my toddler and tried to tell me that he knew her. It was horrible, and there was no security in sight to report him to.”

“A homeless person, known as “Samurai man” on Reddit was wandering outside Avalon Cove and threw a punch at me around 8 pm. He stopped it before it connected and moved on but is a common tactic among homeless people to draw attention to themselves. Another incident occurred at Shop Rite where a man launched his leg at my face before wandering to the employee-only back area to chat with one of the workers who probably talked to him only to get him to go away rather than because they were friends.”

“Often see someone sleep on benches by PingPod and by the river after dark. My spouse and I don't feel comfortable with the situation and it is no longer a luxury environment we chose to move to before, so we are considering moving and we can't recommend Newport to friends anymore.”
